ExactechGPS Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Dr. Pasquale Petrera of Peninsula Orthopedic Associates has been using groundbreaking technology for knee replacement surgery in Salisbury. Now, Dr. Petrera is performing this same procedure at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. This new technology offers guided personalized total knee surgeries for patients.

ExactechGPS® Guided Personalized Surgery is the latest advancement in technology that provides surgeons with real-time visual guidance and alignment data in total knee surgery. Similar to a navigation device in your car, this advanced platform provides a visual map of the patient’s joint on a screen, allowing surgeons to easily make adjustments, use minimally invasive techniques and perform implant alignment relative to the patient’s needs.

Dr. Petrera notes, “Most total knee surgeons are using 40 year old technology to implant knees in 2015. The ExactechGPS system is the most innovative up-to-date technology in total knee replacement. It is accurate to within 1° or 1 mm of variation. Patients need to ask for this level of accuracy to obtain a well-functioning knee replacement. Many orthopedic studies have shown a lower revision rate with the use of navigation in total knee replacement.”

ExactechGPS combines surgeon expertise with an advanced computer system to perform the patient’s knee surgery with a goal of advanced accuracy and precision. Personalized for a patient’s unique bone structure and anatomy, ExactechGPS allows surgeons to decide where to remove bone and place the knee implant in the optimal position. Combined with Optetrak®, a knee system that has a proven lineage of excellent long-term clinical outcomes1, surgeons are able to have the best of both worlds – a proven implant foundation1 with today’s most modern surgical technologies.

Dr. Petrera goes on to say, “Nanticoke Memorial Hospital’s commitment to care is evident in their purchase of the ExactechGPS unit to allow the newest, most up-to-date technology to be available to patients in Sussex County and the lower Delaware area. Coupled with exemplary customer service Nanticoke has a combination that can’t be beat.”

….. During a total knee replacement, ExactechGPS® maps each person’s individual joint using an infrared camera and active tracker technology working together to monitor the position and mechanical alignment of the joint replacement. The surgeon places simple trackers on the patient’s bone, sending data on the individual’s knee structure and joint movements to the computer. The computer then displays in graphical format the calculated key measurements, allowing the surgeon to decide where to remove bone and appropriately place the implant.
….. The top image (pre-surgery) shows how a misaligned joint impacts the anatomical structure of the joint. The bottom image (post-surgery) shows a properly aligned joint using the ExactechGPS® technology. Using this technology allows the surgeon to make adjustments to ensure accurate and precise placement of the knee implant, based on the patient’s unique anatomy. It provides surgeons with a comprehensive view of the knee joint and bone structure, including key points which are normally difficult to view during knee surgery. It often causes less blood in the knee during surgery which means less pain and a quicker return to mobility for the patient.
