Our family education programs are designed with the ever-changing family in mind. Whether you are becoming a parent or easing an older child into a new role with added responsibilities, Nanticoke Health Services is dedicated to providing you with the information and skills necessary to meet these new challenges.

NOTE: Pre-registration is required for ALL classes. Class sizes are limited, so register early.

Breastfeeding Class

5th session of our Childbirth Education Course

Free breastfeeding education class open to expecting mothers and their support person who are not attending our childbirth education class. Taught by Jacalyn Bradley, Nanticoke’s Lactation Consultant.

This class covers the importance of breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, early feeding, feeding on demand, how to know if the baby is getting enough, and what to expect during the first weeks at home. Topics also included are: milk production, latching and positioning, nutrition during breastfeeding, pumping in the event of premature babies, and returning to work.

Childbirth Education Classes

Complete 5-Week Course

Taught by Nanticoke’s certified Maternal Child Health Clinical Educator, this five-week series is for expectant mothers and their partners.

Topics include:

  • Comfort measures during labor
  • Knowledge of the birthing process
  • Variations of normal labor
  • Cesarean childbirth
  • Risks and benefits of medication for childbirth
  • Communicating with your healthcare provider
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Role of labor companion during labor and delivery
  • Postpartum period
  • Introduction to breastfeeding
  • Tour of Nanticoke’s Mother & Baby Care Center (OB unit)

COST: $50.00 (Some insurance companies may offer reimbursement for the class fee.)

2-Week Refresher Course

This course is for parents who have attended childbirth preparation with a previous pregnancy. This class is held the 2nd and 3rd weeks of the 5-week childbirth education course.

COST: $25.00

Mother & Baby Care Center Tours

Tours of the obstetrical unit (the Mother & Baby Care Center) at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital are available for families who are not attending our childbirth education class.

Safe Sitter Class

The Safe Sitter® course is designed to train pre-teens & teenagers how to be safe baby/child sitters. Components include infant/child development and care, safety, injury prevention, first aid, accident management, emergency protocol, rescue breathing and choking management. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises.

COST: $35 per student (includes course & all materials)

Parenting Classes

Sponsored by CHILD, Inc. and funded by the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families, this course fulfills the Parent Education requirements of Delaware’s Welfare Reform Program, “A Better Chance.”

This course is led by experienced instructors and are designed to strengthen parenting skills with the goal of raising healthy children in safe and nurturing environments. Classes are offered for specific age groups:

  • Birth to Three Years
  • Basic Parenting (4-11 years old)
  • Parents of Teens (ages 12 and up)
